San Diego: Operation "Wear Out the Boys"

Day 8 - Sunday, June 23rd

What was going to be a nice and easy long run turned into a brisk 50 minute 6 miler once I got out past the Midway and started seeing more and more homeless people.  They literally are sleeping all over San Diego....on the streets, on the piers, on all the benches...everywhere.  You would think the city would come up with a plan or a place for them at least.

I made it back just in time for a morning family breakfast out by the pool, then we were off on our day.  I think the concierge at the West Harbor Club Tower thinks were nuts for taking all our bikes in and out of the high rise condo.  We brought all 4 bikes down the elevator and headed out for the USS Midway.  There's a beautiful new Bob Hope Memorial outside the Midway that was commissioned February 16th, 2013

And here is the sculpture of "Save the Kiss". From the famous picture of the end of WWI in New York.

I know my Grandpa would love tosee this   beautiful sculpture, and Cole did a mighty fine job snapping the picture!  We locked up our bikes and boarded on the Midway.

The boys loved the bunker, especially Carson!

Our tour had just started, and he was ready for a nap!

I think the boys favorite part was jumping over the door ways.  Both boys literally jumped up and over every single doorway.

These boys are awesome, they made it through the whole tour!

After the tour, we biked back down the harbor and stopped for some yummy pizza on the bay, then biked back to the condo for a short nap.  While Carson was napping, we watch the tugboats toe a giant barge through the harbor....I LOVE THIS VIEW!!!!!

If we didn't have the boys, I'd imagine Curtis and I would just sit by the windows and watch the boats come in and out of the harbor.....that's why call it "National Lampoon Schettler Vacation" instead of "Schettler Summer Relaxation".....anyways....Carson woke up, and we were off again!

This time, we decided to only bring the boys bikes because Carson was pretty treaterous on the ride back from the Midway on the streets.  He even rode in between some tall guys legs in front of the Convention Center.

We biked/walked around the Convention Center to the 5th Avenue Coronado Ferry.  Thankfully, the SD Padres were playing at Petco Park, so that meant the Ferry was running every 20 minutes!

We made it to Coronado Island, and the boys were super excited to hit the beach.

Cole immediately stripped off his shoes and immediately put his "toes in the water, ass in the sand"

These are two happy boys!  Cole takes after his Grandma Becki and has never met a stranger.  He immediately made a friend, Lucas, who was with his family building sand castles.

They played and played for a few hours until Cole was completely soaked!

We found a little Mediterranean restaurant, Spiro's Gyros, with the gyro platter I've ever eaten.  Curtis and I started stressing about our drive up to northern San Francisco tomorrow.  Lucas's parents were locals and told us for a 12 hour drive to get to San Francisco, and to not plan to leave San Diego before 10:00 am!  What?!?!?  They did give us some good advice on directions to take the 405 to get through LA.

We loaded back on the ferry, and rode back to the condo to begin the massive "pack the car" endeavor.  The car was loaded, and we were all in bed asleep by 9:00 pm.  The goal for the morning is to be driving by 4:30 am, in hopes to make it through the 155 miles straight through Los Angeles by 7:30 am....fingers and toes all crossed!!!!
