Day 19-Day 21: We have been so excited about camping with our cousins. The boys have been counting down the days to "Faith" time. We pulled up to LaPine State Park after our mountain biking venture at Mount Bachelor ready to relax!
One hour later, up pulls Amy, Darrin, and Faith!
We relaxed around the campsite for the next 3 days!
On July 3rd, we drove to 20 miles to Newberry Volcanic National Monument for spelunking/hiking in the Lava Tube Cave!
This cave was totally different from Carlsbad Caverns.
To start, Carlsbad has lights throughout the entire cave, so no need to carry lights. The Lava Cave had NO lighting, so we brought out tiny bike lights and hoped that was enough.....it wasn't.... this Lava Cave was formed from chutes of lava that rose to the surface creating the massive cave and it was COLD!!! Carlsbad was a cool 55 degrees inside the cave, but this lava tube dropped to 42 degrees! Brrrr!!!! That's ALOT colder than 55! We were not prepared for the temps...as you can see from the shorts. Poor Carson was freezing, but he pushed through and persevered. He tucked his hands inside his sweater and gave up his light, so if I got more than 6 inches away from him he was in the total darkness. Very scary!
We kept pushing with frozen fingers and frozen toes and made it back to the surface.
After our hike we set off for the Visitor Center and Junior Cave Explorer and Newberrt Volcanic National Monument Ranger badges.
We've loved our camping fun with the family and cannot wait to see Great-Grandpa tomorrow!
