Crater Lake/Mt. Bachelor

Day 18:  We drive our short 200 mile drive....in California/Oregon Cascade Mountain Range took almost 6 hours....to Crater Lake National Park for the night.

There were LOTS of mosquitos on the melting snow, but it didn't defer the boys from playing in the snow in 80 degrees with shorts and t-shirts.

Crater Lake was formed when a MASSIVE 12,000 foot volcano, Mount Mazama erupted 7,700 years ago.  The eruption caused a major blast where the entire volcano fell into itself thus creating Crater Lake, the most prestige lake and deepest in the country.  There are no rivers that flow in or out of Crater Lake, just prestige mountain snow.  That's the reason for the vivid blue color.

Pictures do not do it justice.

The boys earned a Junior Ranger Patch and badge, and loved playing in the snow.

Unfortunately, we were only here for one night, but enjoyed every second...except the massive mosquitos.

We ended the evening with movie night in the Casita 2.0 with "The Neverending Story"

Day 19:  Yay!!!!!  Today is the day we get to see our cousins, Amy, Darren, and Faith!!!!!  I'm so excited!!!!!  We pulled out of Crater Lake and set off for downhill mountain biking at Mount Bachelor.  I have amazing memories of driving Grandpa's green Winnebago with Just me and Dad to Mount Bachelor in the freezing cold of Oregon winters in the mid-1990s, boondocking on the parking lot, skiing, and living off my Dad's famous green beans.  These awesome green beans were 85% bacon, 10% green beans, and 5%  onions (all cooked in bacon grease, of course). I think we ate them breakfast, lunch, and dinner over our 3 day skiing venture at Mount Bachelor.

Cole and Curtis were the first ones to hit the bike park!

It was then Mommy and Cole's turn to ride.  The "green" was at the upper eschilon of my ability.  The trails were nicely groomed, but there were lots of dips, some rocks, and lava rocks on the sides of the trail.  It definitely wasn't as nice of Trails as Jackson Hole, but better than the giant boulders and switchbacks of Schweitzer Mountain.  I was very impressed with Cole's riding as I was following him.  It was way too challenging for Little Carson.  I'd give him two more years, then he'll be all over it!

Daddy and Cole rode several more rides while Carson and Mommy watched the riders do the big jumps.

Two hours later we packed up and set off for our camping fun in LaPine State Park with Amy, Darren, and Faith!
