The Long Drive Home

Day 42:  We decides to get a head start on the drive last night, so after dinner, we loaded up the camper and set off for Texas.  Two long, windy mountain road hours later, we pulled up to Lookout Pass at the border of Idaho and Montana for the night....just in time for Mommy to throw up...ugh!  That mountain pass gets me every year...darn carsickness....

Day 43:  We drove through Montana and stayed at the Sheridan WY KOA...that’s about it....575 miles.  We did have a nice lunch at Olive Garden in Bozeman, Montana.

Day 44:  After a mean thunderstorm last night, we were up and driving to Mount Rushmore.

The boys were awarded their first Junior Ranger badge of the summer.  This makes number 47 I think...we’ve pretty much tapped the Junior Ranger Badges out.  Mount Rushmore was cool!

We had some very ominous clouds, then it started to downpour.  We drove the 5 miles back to our KOA, and it was flooded, all muddy, and only 2:15pm, so we went back to the office, asked for our money back, and set off on the road.  No reason to sit at a rainy KOA all afternoon when we can chip away at our 1,100 mile drive we have left....so we drove...raining the whole way....through South Dakota.....through Nebraska....and pulled into the Odallala Walmart at 8:00pm 5 seconds before the thunderstorm that was chasing us dumped.

Day 45:  Camping in the Walmart parking lot was a first for us, but now we’re 300 more miles into the drive home and we saved $86 from canceling the KOA reservation, so double bonus.  The alarm went off at 4:30am, and we hopped in the truck for our last 800 mile leg home.  Yep, this day was going to be a long one, but at least it will end at our beautiful home stocked with two brand new 40 gallon water heaters.  I’m planning to take a three hour shower when I get home.

6 months later.....our last leg home was AWFUL!  We pulled up 15 hours later, to a broken AC at the house, set the camper, and camper roof leaked all over our bed!  Ugh!!!!  We fixed the AC, took the camper to the shop to fix the replace AC, and the rest is history!
