Little Red Cabin

We’ll, we did it!  14 months later, we sold our Lance Camper, joined Eastern Star, Curtis became a Master Mason, and we finalized on our little red cabin in the Masonic Park in South Fork, Colorado.

First visit….Spring Break skiing at Wolf Creek (well, technically we hadn’t finalized yet, so this doesn’t really count…just dreaming)

April 15th, we closed on our cabin! 💗. 10 days later, we returned (with Grandma) to officially embark on our dreams.

And BOY we realized just how much work we had to do….

Step 1….clear out the crap….there was A LOT of crap!  75 years of old knickknacks.  Here are the before pictures:

Quick weekend trip with 2 trips to the Dump, hiking, exploring, and cleaning, and we were heading back to Texas.

One month later, we finished up the dreaded Covid school year, loaded both the Honda and Truck (with 6 mattresses) and headed back to South Fork!

First project….DEEP CLEAN!  It took us 6 full weeks to deep clean the whole cabin, so this kept ongoing through June 😂. We pulled up all the carpets and rugs in the bedrooms, pledged and vaccumed the floors, walls, and ceilings til they were spick and span.  The boys and I were there for a week, so we focused on cleaning, fishing, cleaning fish, and eating fish.

Yes, we’ve found our happy place!

Mom flew up for a quick trip, and to help me drive back to Texas with the boys while Curtis stayed to work on the Cabin.

Two trips to the dump later, We headed home for Scout camps, and Curtis got to work!

Step 2….resurfacing and sealing the logs.  BIG Project!  Power washing, log washing, hand sanding, staining, restraining, chinking, and resealing the chinking. Before….

As you can tell, the cabin definitely needed some TLC….By the time it was done, the cabin was stained and sealed tight!

That project took Curtis a full week of 15 hour days of hard labor to finish, but she’s secure for another 10-15 years at least.

Step 3….pull up living room carpet and pad.

Deep cleaning, AND…another trip to the dump…

And our furniture was ready to arrive!!!

The next day, the Hudecs arrived for a quick trip to the cabin.

The fishing was great!  JD caught some, and Austin even caught his first fish!  He’s hooked!!  Less thank 24 hours later, the Hudecs had to leave, but promised to stay a full week next summer, and the Schettlers arrived from NOLA and El Paso.

This time, Sabrina got to catch her first fish!

So much fun!!!  While Curtis was being the “host with the most” the boys were having the time of their lives and making their Grandpas proud at Camp Hale Scout Reservation and Webelos Resident Camp at James Ray.

After summer camp, we hopped on a plane to head back to South Fork, but not before Curtis completed another project….his family headed back to El Paso, and he decided to tackle the hideous red laminate in the kitchen…

Or should I say….layers of hideous red laminate…

Another load to the dump….I think that makes trip number 5, and he picked us up ready for two more weeks at the cabin!

We were all super happy to see Daddy!  ðŸ’—

We arrived and hit the fishing!  This time, instead of fishing at the stocked Big Meadow Reservior, the boys went straight to the Rio Grande River!

Whew!  Fresh mountain brown, spotted, and rainbow trout!  The boys are hooked!  Rod and reel fishing, spinner fishing, fly fishing…you name it, they fished these Gold Medal Trout Waters…walking distance from the cabin in the Masonic Park!

Back to projects….operation basement and attic clean out….and two more trips to the dump…before…

And after….

Next project….touch up shutters, fence, bench, and swing with our favorite color, Barn Red!

We were so excited to finish the cabin projects!

We had one final project we wanted to do for the Masonic Park, and that was donating and replacing the old basketball goal.

Two long days and one more final trip to the dump….I think that was 7 trips total, and we were done!

We finished our two weeks (6 for Curtis) with more fishing and relaxing.

We love you, Little Red Cabin in the Masonic Park, and will see you soon!
